MANSION WEST Commonly known as The Playboy Mansion, is located in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California (10236 Charing Cross Road) residence of Playboy magazine publisher Hugh Hefner, and is arguably one of the most famous residences in California. The house was built in 1927 and was acquired by Playboy in 1971. It became famous during the 1970s because of Hefner's lavish parties. Even when not hosting parties, Hefner's home is usually filled with friends, Playmates, and celebrities enjoying the mansion's amenities.
Some of the mansions amenities include 22 bedrooms, a large swimming pool with a water fountain and an artificial grotto. The grounds also contain a zoo and aviary. These features and many others have often been showcased on television. The original Playboy Mansion was a 70-room residence in Chicago, Illinois at 1340 North State Parkway. It was built in 1899 and acquired by Hefner in 1959. For a period in the 1970s, Hefner divided his time between the Chicago mansion and the Mansion West, moving fulltime to the California mansion in 1974. The Chicago mansion boasted a brass plate on the door reading Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare ("If you don't swing, don't ring"). During the early 2000s, ESPN began broadcasting live boxing bouts from the house's large backyard. Vassiliy Jirov is one of the notables to have fought there. Sugar Ray Leonard, in his capacity as boxing promoter, has held boxing cards there. In addition to numerous Playboy features and pictorials, the Playboy Mansion has been the subject of a coffee table book (Inside the Playboy Mansion, 1998, ISBN 157544044X), a video game (Playboy: The Mansion, in which the player must build the Playboy "empire"), and inspired the U2 song "The Playboy Mansion" on their 1997 album Pop. Weezer shot the music video for the single "Beverly Hills" from their 2005 album Make Believe at the Mansion. In 2005 life at the Mansionspecifically the world of Hef's girlfriends Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinsonwas featured on the E! reality television series The Girls Next Door. |

STUDIO WEST is located in Santa Barbara, CA (2112 Broadway Avenue). It is one of Playboy's key studio facilities for Playboy photographers to shoot centerfolds and playmate pictorials for the magazine and various newsstand specials. A lot of models had their test nude shoots taken at this facility prior to being considered for a playmate pictorial in Playboy. Its exterior and interior were shown in episodes of E! Reality television series The Girls Next Door in 2005. In one episode, then future playmates Raquel Gibson and Sara Jean had their playmate test shoots taken. In another episode, this is where Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson had their cover shoot for the November 2005 issue of Playboy taken on a replica of Hugh Hefner's bed. |

PLAYMATE is a female model featured in Playboy magazine as Playmate of the Month (or PMOM). The Playmate's pictorial includes nude photographs and a centerfold poster, as well as a short biography and the "Playmate Data Sheet", which lists her birthdate, measurements, and likes and dislikes. At the end of the year, one of the twelve Playmates of the Month is named Playmate of the Year (or PMOY). Playmates are paid $25,000 USD and the Playmate of the Year receives an additional $100,000 USD plus a car. In addition, Anniversary Playmates are usually chosen to celebrate a milestone year of the magazine. As of August 2005, 622 women have been Playmates, the majority of whom were in their early twenties when their pictorial was taken. Playmates are chosen from every social strata, having different professions, countries and backgrounds. Playboy encourages potential Playmates to send photos for consideration; others may submit photos of Playmate candidates, and are eligible for a $2,500 USD finder's fee if their model is selected. Readers are encouraged to send in pictures of their girlfriends and wives with the "Girl next door" appeal. The Playboy photographers and Hugh Hefner then decide who are the lucky candidates. The Playmate of the Year is chosen personally by Hugh Hefner, taking into account an annual readers poll. The first model called a Playmate of the Month was Margie Harrison, Miss January 1954 (the second issue of Playboy). (Marilyn Monroe, who was featured in the first issue, was "Sweetheart of the Month") The first fold-out centerfold was in March 1956 with Marian Stafford. The first Playmate to show pubic hair in a pictorial was Liv Lindeland, Miss January 1971 (the first appearance of pubic hair in Playboy was in an August 1969 pictorial featuring actress Paula Kelly) Generally a woman may only appear once as a Playmate, but in the early years of the magazine some models were featured multiple times. Margaret Scott (model) (February 1954, April 1954, April 1955 the latter two appearances were as Marilyn Waltz) and Janet Pilgrim (July 1955, December 1955, and October 1956) are tied for the most appearances. Margie Harrison (January 1954, June 1954) and Marguerite Empey (aka Diane Webber) (May 1955, February 1956) are the only other women to appear more than once as Playmates. Multiple women, usually twins, have also appeared as a single month's Playmate. Misses October 1970 were Mary and Madeleine Collinson; Misses September 1989 were Karin and Mirjam van Breeschooten; Misses December 1998 were triplets Erica, Nicole, and Jaclyn Dahm, and Misses January 2000 were Carol and Darlene Bernaola. Misses October 1958, Pat Sheehan and Mara Corday, were unrelated. Traditionally, PMOYs are announced to the world in May of each year at a media luncheon at the Playboy Mansion. Each year's Playmate of the Year appears on the cover of her PMOY issue - the issue in which her PMOY pictorial is featured, usually the June issue of the next year after her first appearance in the magazine, sometimes the July issue. However, since 2003, PMOYs no longer appear on the covers of their PMOY issues. Instead, celebrities appearing in celebrity pictorials in the PMOY issues have appeared on the covers. Playboy points out [1] that there are no "former" Playmates: "Once a Playmate, always a Playmate". In 2002, Hugh Hefner purchased a house across the street from the Playboy Mansion specifically for use by the Playmates. The four-bedroom split-level home has a Midcentury-modern decor. |
| PLAYBOY ON
CAMPUS is a program under Playboy Enterprises' College Division. Its purpose is to spread the lifestyle of Playboy on campuses across North America using college students as representatives. The program is the resurrection of Playboy's "Man On Campus" program which was active during the 60's and 70's. The Playboy on Campus program otherwise known as the "POC" was founded in 1998 with only 15 members or representatives. Today there are nearly 300 members representing over 200 colleges. Playboy On Campus Representatives participate in various joint marketing and promotions with other companies including Sony and Hot Topic. It also the job of the Representatives to be the eyes and ears of Playboy by reporting on current trends and topics at their respective colleges. Many regularly contribute to Playboy.com. |

| THE
BEST-SELLING PLAYBOY EDITION was the November 1972 edition, which sold 7,161,561 copies. Artist Jack Niland designed the cover to embody the principles of Dharma Art as taught by meditation master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Perhaps coincidentally, a cropped image of the issue's centerfold (which featured Lena Soderberg) became an industry-standard for testing image processing algorithms. It is known simply as the "Lenna" image in that field. |
| IS PLAYBOY
BANNED IN ANY COUNTRIES in most parts of Asia (including China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei), Playboy is banned. In 2003, the Censorship Review Committee in Singapore concluded that the ban should be continued because the Singaporean community is not ready for Playboy's liberal use of sexually explicit photographs. In the 1980s, a well-publicized ban occurred when the American convenience store chain 7-Eleven decided to remove the magazine from its stores.
